New Zealand – Southland Guided Week Adventure
$4,999.00 – $9,748.00
Flying directly in and out of Queenstown mainly chasing browns in streams, and staying at Hurley House in Lumsden, almost a sheep paddock from the world-renowned Oreti River, the place is, well perfect!
Generally fishing easier walking streams like the Mataura and Wakaia Rivers, are abundant with fish in the 3-5lb category, whilst the larger waters such as the Oreti hold fish in the 6-10lb range. The bigger rivers can sometimes require a bit more skill and walking at times, but almost every fish is sight cast, and to me, that is what fly fishing New Zealand is all about.
The ‘Lodge’ is a clean share environment and great for a fishing trip. It is a perfect first-time ‘NZeder’, where you will get plenty of opportunities at good quality fish in easily accessible water, the rest is up to you!
I guess the main differences between our trips and others are that we use local Kiwi guides, local accommodation, and locally cooked meals, which literally involves the entire community. The other is we accompany you on these adventures. We have consistently fished the many rivers and lakes in the area over many years and makes certain your trip is the best it can be. Arriving and leaving on a Sunday, so you get the full 6 days of fly fishing.
All trips include at least 3 days with Kiwi guides and 3 days with your HFFA guide. Prices include everything except airfares!
Want to do two weeks?
Add a second week for ONLY $4749! 12 days fishing for only $9748!

Have just returned from a week with the Hurley’s Fly Fishing Team in New Zealand’s Southland. I could not think of a better Country and Rivers to go Fly Fishing and the Team at Hurley’s Fly Fishing go out of their way to make sure you experience all Southland has to offer.
Whether you are fishing with the Hurleys Fly Fishing Team or New Zealand Local Guides over your week, you are made to feel comfortable with your level of Fly Fishing experience and have every opportunity to catch those wonderful New Zealand trout.
A professional, well organised, friendly, value for money tour that you can’t help coming away planning the next trip with the Hurley’s Fly Fishing team.
You have to go!!!

I had a brilliant week in Southland in March 2013 hosted by Col Hurley and Rick Houghton. They ensured that everything went smoothly from pick-up to drop-off at Queenstown airport. Nothing was too much trouble for them. The local Kiwi guides are masters of their art and delightful company. The fishing, needless to say, was sensational. It was almost all sight fishing with an endless stream of opportunities targeting good fish on dries and nymphs in many different rivers. I enjoyed the trip so much that I’ve already been on one of the Christmas Island trips and booked to go on a West Coast trip later this year. Excellent value for money, too!

Reflecting upon the week I had based at Lumsden for the last week of April 2015 and thelast week of the season. The weather started out being foul, snowing, cold and wet but given that we were decked out in waders and jackets it didn’t really matter. What did matter was the fishing and that Gavin and Derek were able to put us on fish after fish – not all were caught but sure offered a lot of sport. Later in the week the weather improved . Gavins hideaway at Lumsden was cosy comfortable, some may say the snoring was a bit loud. I am seriously checking my calender for a return journey in 2016

I go back every year for the guides alone. Brendan, Scott, Lloyd, Ed, Mike or Gavin, they are all brilliant with different skills that I can’t help but learn from, which is the whole point.
I feel I am a better fly fisher after every trip.
Can’t wait to get back there.

The thing I most like about these trips is that they involve the local community.
Local guides, local cooks, local meats, local veggies, local accommodation, even local wines and beers, and the local pub at the end of the week is definitely a night to look forward to, and sometimes remember. with some great characters.
The fishing is world class, amazing, to the point I look forward to my trips months in advance, mainly because you see everything unfold in front of you. Big fish, clear water just equals fun whether you catch them or scare them!
Its really an incredibly well organised trip that you will enjoy, I hope as much as I do every year.

I wanted a trip with my elderly father, but didn’t want to slow down the group.
Gavin assured me he could arrange the perfect family adventure, at my dads pace.
Unfortunately my father has gone now, but we got to enjoy some lifelong memories in this incredible place that I am eternally grateful for.
Can’t recommend this enough and I so wish I had done it many years before.

It is my 4th trip and I book in a year in advance. I travel by myself and fish with mostly new people each season and really enjoy the mateship that is inevitable in every new group. Have never been in a bad group and enjoy a few beers at the end of a day and the food is well, I come back heavier than I left!
Highly recommend the trips, you will love it.

I did this trip with my best man and our sons who are nearly the same age and I can honestly say it is the best week of fishing I have ever done.
The boys listened, learnt and improved out of sight in such a short time, and on the last two days didn’t fish with us each day but together, which I think really helped their confidence as they ended up catching the biggest fish of the trip.
Something that you will never regret, and the photos will last a lifetime.

I went in November 2019, caught my first ever ten pounder. Did the willow grubbers shorter trip in January, which I think I enjoyed, even more, exceptional sight fishing.
Then was booked in for the April mayfly and spinner feeders and bloody Coronavirus…
Way cheaper than everyone else and the kiwi guides, really great accommodation and food with the odd quiet beer

From the first cast on my first day and a hookup at 3.5lbs to my last cast on my last day with my PB at just over 7lbs.
Great Guides, great accommodation and magic scenery with so many fish.
Was a trip of a life time until my next trip ?
Can’t wait to get back.
